Hello

I’m Simon, a father, adventurer, sketchbook-carrying traveller, music lover and certified coffee maniac.

I’ve spent decades in professional roles leading teams and building ideas but I’ve always made time for the things that bring me joy. Long rides, quiet sketches, good conversations, and yes, the deeply satisfying ritual of making coffee at home.

Home Barista Lab grew from that passion. It’s where I share what I’ve learnt through study, mistakes and many, many cups to help you brew with confidence and enjoy your coffee journey a whole lot more.

My Story

I’ve wanted to enjoy great coffee at home for a long time. Not just drinking it, but brewing it myself. I started with a French press and expensive supermarket coffee in a beautiful tin. It looked the part but it tasted awful. One brew was sour. The next was bitter. Then thin. Then gritty. Eventually, I gave up.

Next came a bean-to-cup machine. I bought the best beans I could find from Starbucks and hoped for better. But again, sour. Then bitter. Then sour again. Nothing was consistent. I didn’t understand why.

Nespresso followed. Life got easier. The coffee was more consistent. But it wasn’t satisfying.

That’s when the experiments really began. Mokapot. French press (again). V60. AeroPress. I read blogs, watched videos, followed recipes. I tried many things but never knew what was actually making the difference.

An espresso appreciation class gave me my first proper insight. I learned with a barista and for the first time I had some idea of what was really going on. I got really interested in espresso. Bought a machine and a grinder. Tried to apply what I’d learnt...but it was tough. The coffee still wasn’t quite right.

So I went for a full-day barista foundation course. Then came the intermediate course. Then the professional. Each time, I learnt more, gained confidence and improved. But even after all that, coming home to my own setup still meant trial and error. Dialling in was difficult. Wasting beans was a common thing. I wasn’t always sure what tweak was making what change.

I practised. A lot. Every day. I poured, adjusted and refined. Slowly, things began to click. I upgraded my grinder. I started dialling in with more accuracy. I could make better guesses. I understood roast levels, bean types, water temperature, milk texture. I got confident. I got consistent. But it took a very long time and hundreds of cups.

And through it all, I often thought: I wish I had someone to guide me. Not just in a class, but right here, with my gear, in my space.

That’s why I started Home Barista Lab.
